Default Supplier Performance Measurement

Supplier performance measurement is the process of measuring, analyzing, and
managing supplier performance for the purposes of reducing costs, mitigating
risk, and driving continuous improvements in value and operations.

Common and consistent measurements can help companies focus resources, identify
performance glitches, develop strategies for supply chain improvements, and
determine the total cost of ownership (TCO) of supply relationships, products,
and entire supply chains.

Would agree with above definition by Aberdeen but would like to add that Supplier Performance Measurement could also be used to continuously measure and improve other areas - such as innovation - with suppliers.

In this topic, I think BEE companies need to be looked as job creaters of most economies therefore while we have measurement tools that measure their consistencies in service provision we should also look at ways in which we can help/assist them improve their current business statuses. I mention this because there are various issues that limit their true potential, like lack of resources, etc from almost all spectrum of the business.

Without changing the subject too much I feel that the current situation is in most cases one of dismal failure.
Currently doing a project in the Eastern Cape and find it really difficult to firstly get in contact with suppliers and then also hand in hand with that getting acceptable levels of service from these suppliers.

No Response:
The total cost of an order can be pushed up significantly by these non-responsive suppliers as it baasically puts the whole process back to square one.

Inadequate resources:
Very important for an organization to look at implementing a proper process of verification for their suppliers as this will deal directly with the problem of one supplier being "linked" to several services and not being equiped to provide half of them.
This has a serious impact on service delivery as it creates a perception about supplier skills / services.

Bad Service Delivery:
Bad service delivery is a huge problem as there are massive costs involved most of the time. Not only does the cost of an order go up or double as the service now needs to be rendered / fixed by another service provider but in most cases the TCO is also influenced extensively.

As I said not to change subject or rather not to ramble on about it but these are my views. I see this everyday and seriously think that something needs to be done across the board to support both suppliers and organizations....something like SEDA but more involved.
